Kibale national park is located to the north-east of queen Elizabeth national park. Though the two national parks almost touch each other, the road driving distance between the two national parks is around 130km, a distance that takes drive time of about 2.5hours. The travel from Kibale national park to Queen Elizabeth national park is through Kamwenge – fort portal and fort portal – Kasese roads. One can choose to drive through the crater lakes area to take the opportunities of great scenery, nature walks and other community encounters on this shortcut that joins fort portal-Kasese road from Rwimi area. Please note that, the crater lakes route doesn’t have public transport means and is suited for travelers using private transport means. If you wil be using public transport users on this route, you will take transport in two to three Levels as listed bellow.
- Kibale nationala park to Fortportal: The Kamwenge-Fort portal road has recently been tarmacked improving the travel experience and lowering travel time from 60 to 35 minutes. On this route, you will be able to find public transport including shared taxis or sometimes buses travelling from the towns of Kamwenge, Ibanda or mbarara to fort portal. It is also possible to get a special hire from bigodi or any hotel around Kibale national park to fort portal at an affordable price.
- Fortportal town to Kasese town: From fort portal, you will easily find public shared taxis or buses to Kasese town (75km). Kasese town is located. just go to fortportal taxi park or to link bus terminal within fortportal town.
- Kasese town to Queen Elizabeth: From kasese town, you will find taxis or buses that will take you to queen Elizabeth national park. Kasese town is located 15-20 minutes’ drive, from Queen Elizabeth national park (depending on the location of your lodge) on Fort portal Mpondwe road (Kasese Mbarara road). If you take a taxi or bus from fort portal to Kasese town, you will easily find a taxi in Kasese Taxi Park to drop you at your preferred destination which may be Muhokya, Kikorongo, Kasenyi gate, Katunguru, Kyambura, Bunyaruguru or any other stopover point where your lodge is located. It is also possible to find buses or taxis that take you straight from fort portal to Queen Elizabeth national park as they head to Mbarara or to Mpondwe (Congo boarder).
It is very important to write the desired stop over point on paper during travel, to avoid being dropped at a wrong point.
