7-day Rwenzori trek: exclusive Bukurungu trail

Bukurungu trail is the newest and pristine Rwenzori trek trail. The trail offers a cross section of Rwenzori views and scenarios from the north to the central highest peaks. The trail is mainly wilderness camping with established campgrounds in the popular mountains of the moon. The trail mainly takes guests through all the five vegetation zones of Rwenzori Mountains that offer the most memorable Uganda mountain expedition.

Bukurungu trail that feeds into the central circuit trail is a typical adventure travel. The central circuit trail is where the snow caped peaks are accessed. At three camps on this trail, shelters have been established where you pitch tour tent while at other three camps you pitch a tent on the open ground as you take mountain views and enjoy the Uganda alpine landscape.

  • Day 1: Base Camp - Kasanzi Camp

    Day 1. Trekking starts from Omukorukumi Base camp of Bukurungu trail at 1539m. Today you get introduced to Uganda mountain biodiversity. Trekking will mainly be in the grassland zone, the lowest of the five vegetation zones of Rwenzori, dominated by the mountain villages. Common sight will include local way of life, farming, education centres, markets, homesteads, farms, local architecture on the gentle hills and valleys of Rwenzori offering one of the best landscape views. Later in the day, enter the forest canopy and arrive to Kasanzi camp 2411m. for our night stay.
  • Day 2: Kasanzi camp - Kambeho Camp

    Day 2. After breakfast, start trekking from Kasanzi camp to Kambeho Camp 3286m. Kambeho means cold in the local dialect. This is the second camp on Bukurungu trail. The trek is mainly through Afro-montane forest, the Bamboo zone and ending in the heather vegetation zone. Trek for 5km and have an access to phone network connection at Rwabitakuli ridge. at this point, you will get great relaxing mountain views on this legendary Rwenzori trekking route. You will then head a breaking point at Rwigho Camp (3048m) before you can proceed on the next 5km trek to today’s destination. Common site during the trek are the panoramic views of the crater lakes area below Rwenzori Mountains, forest canopy habitat, rivers and bogs with chances of spotting birds, primates and chimps.  Arrive later in the afternoon to pitch your camp at Kambeho (3286m)
  • Day 3: Kambeho Camp - Lame Camp

    After breakfast, start the trek to Lame Camp. Lame is the name of the river that form the boarder of Uganda and Congo in the upper Rwenzori Mountains. Today's trek offers a generous part of the Uganda alpine scenery at some spots. The trek is mainly through the heather zone mixed with bamboo and forest patches. Common site on the trail are the beautiful flowers, unique vegetation such as the lobelia, and the unique Rwenzori insects and bugs, and other Rwenzori mountain flora and fauna. On today's trek, you will reach the highest point of this trail (3985m.) where you will view the great uganda alpine scenery and slope to the Congo side of the mountains. Later, after passing Lake Mughuli, arrive at lame Camp (3536m) located in the heather forest close to Lame River, on the boarder of Uganda and Congo.
  • Day 4: Lame camp - Bigo Camp

    After an early breakfast, start the trek to Bigo camp (3442m) the trek is entirely in heather vegetation zone of Rwenzori Mountains as you get closer to the Uganda mountain peaks with snow at the equator. During today's trek, your in a pool of Uganda mountain biodiversity. Common site are the Rwenzori alpine vegetation fields, extended views, sun-bird sound as they parch on the tall standing Lobelia, and some red rivers unique to this part of the mountain.  With The trail goes south along the Uganda Congo boarder offering scenic views over the beautiful ridges, wetlands and tussocks fields. Take the beautiful views over Bukurungu Lake and the beautiful mountains on Congo side. You then slope to Bigo where you will set camp before dinner and overnight.
  • Day 5: Bigo Camp - Irene Lake

    Today is a journey to the Rwenzori glaciers territory. After breakfast, we enter the alpine zone and trek all the way up to the camp in the north-eastern flank of Mt. Stanley, Irene Lakes (4495 m). Lunch in Irene Lakes Camp as we set up for the ascend to The highest point of Rwenzori mountains at 5109m above seas level; Margarita peak, tomorrow. on this day, you will prove that Rwenzori is the home of Uganda alpine scenery.
  • Day 6: Irene Lake-Margarita-Bigo Camp

    Today you step on the Rwenzori glaciers. Set off early morning before sunrise from Irene Lake (4495 m) to Margarita (5,109 m). After a successful ascend, and if the weather is clear, you will spend some time taking the views, picture moments on the roof of Uganda that offers the most rewarding view and the best Uganda alpine scenery, before you return to Bigo camp (3525m) for dinner and overnight.
  • Day 7: Bigo Camp - the Base Camp

    After an early breakfast trek From Bigo Camp (3525m) to the base camp via Nyabithaba Camp (2632 m) This makes today's trek the longest in distance though the easiest since it will be mainly descending to a lower altitude. Descend through the heather zone as you take views of the Mountains Ranges. Today's trek is a favorite of people who like to go long on the uganda hiking trails as they get this in a full dose. Have lunch at Omukomujungu and continue to Nyabithaba and the base camp for a relaxing moment at the community camp before transferring to the next destination or to Ruboni Community camp at Rwenzori base camp, Nyakalengijo.
